White Paper: Digitizing construction for better product exchange, identification, and transparency
buildingSMART International announces a joint white paper titled “Digitizing construction for better product exchange, identification, and transparency” that directly addresses the opportunities through use cases through the mutual industry bodies of GS1 and bSI.
The opportunity to align standards and technologies will provide huge benefits throughout the whole lifecycle of the construction industry. For example, when applied to Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) would provide real opportunities to better understand information and products inside a building or facility and further accelerate the digitization of the construction industry.
The buildingSMART International Awards 2021 webpage is now live! A short introductory video, PDF overview, full submission, and final presentation for each of the winners, finalists, and special mentions is now available via the buildingSMART International website.
2021 saw an astonishing 133 submissions across the 8 categories, 86 of which passed the triage stage. A total of 9 winners were announced at the Awards Ceremony, alongside recognition of the other 12 finalists and 7 special mentions.

buildingSMART International is conducting an industry survey to better understand BIM use and BIM aspirations within the community. Help us learn more about what makes BIM so vital and provide key insights into the future of BIM.
The short survey was developed with Oracle Construction and Engineering - Strategic Advisory Council Member.
Construction Room Survey
buildingSMART International’s Construction Room has developed a survey that is focused on identifying use cases that use openBIM® and aims to capture industry needs and requirements.
The aim is to improve digital understanding and collaboration on construction sites by establishing a complete data workflow between all stakeholders where model-based estimation, scheduling, work preparation, and progress reporting will be covered digitally.
GIS and openBIM drive innovation, communication and success for Skanska
This session highlighted how Skanska’s approach to openBIM and their use of GIS lead to successfully making available many types of data and brought value to all teams and stakeholders.

Schneider Electric Joins the buildingSMART International
Strategic Advisory Council
Schneider Electric, the World’s Most Sustainable Company in 2021 as ranked by Corporate Knights and leader in digital transformation of energy management, today underlines its commitment to developing a more sustainable, efficient and resilient building industry by joining buildingSMART International’s Strategic Advisory Council (SAC).
With the construction and building industry needing to become more efficient and sustainable, there is a growing need for standards, processes, and digitisation of energy management at the design, construction, operational and maintenance phases of building operations. Schneider is aiming to take a leadership role in the buildingSMART community by sharing its proprietary knowledge and expertise with the international community to help decarbonise buildings, which are currently responsible for around 40% of global CO2 emissions.
Infrastructure Room activities and Roadmap Workshops
The Infrastructure Room Steering Committee, led by Tiina Perttula, has established a Roadmap Working Group tasked with driving progress relating to our Roadmap. The Roadmap Working Group includes Jim Plume; Juergen Litsch; Anna Neidenstrom; and Tristan McDonnell. The committee is grateful to Phil Jackson for the excellent work he has done coordinating the roadmap content over the previous years.
InfraRoom Roadmap workshop – The buildingSMART German Chapter, in collaboration with IRSC, facilitated the first Roadmap Workshop on 11th November 2021 in Germany. The purpose of the workshop was to explore the Roadmap and invite feedback to influence the direction to be taken for future development. The workshop was attended by 24 participants representing the breadth of the construction industry and firms including Deutsche Bahn, Autobahn GmbH and BAST.
The workshop concluded useful insight and suggestions including:
a) IFC and GIS –how will the interfaces work? b) Use-cases to be defined from an operational point of view. c) IFC Exchange –how does design-to-design work.
All bSI Chapters are encouraged to deliver similar Roadmap Workshops to explore and capture the needs of the industry. The IRSC Roadmap Working Group has prepared presentation material, suggested agendas, and mechanisms to record findings. If of interest to your bSI Chapter please get in touch with the IRSC Roadmap Working Group:
IFC4precast has been officially recognized as a "Final Standard" by buildingSMART International, marking the release of IFC4precast for all software vendors and allowing it to be increasingly applied.
The achievement of this milestone is the result of several years of hard work and continuous commitment of the participating companies from Germany, Austria, Italy, and Finland. With the successful software validation, the internationally consolidated and finally approved standard was confirmed by the bSI Standards Committee Executive as well as other related Committees and Chapters.
Join Richard Kelly, Operations Director at bSI, as he hosts his first podcast in the next available episode of the Digital Twins Podcast. Below follows a summary of the new episode available, which you can listen to on either Buzzsprout or Spotify by clicking the respective links below.
Listen to Karin Anderson, Senior BIM Specialist at Trafikverket, as we explore her career in civil engineering, the adoption of digital ways of working on large capital infrastructure projects and the important role client organizations need to play in driving transformation.
