2021: A Year in Review
A message from Richard Petrie, Chief Executive at buildingSMART International:
2021 has been another colossal year for buildingSMART. I’d like to start with a massive declaration of thanks to the greater buildingSMART team. From rooms, projects, and chapters to the bSI management office, I have really noticed an increased alignment and commitment to work together as a whole buildingSMART team towards our common goals. This is great leadership, and it is a pleasure to watch the acceleration that follows. A special thank you to my immediate colleagues who have provided much of that vision.
Our mission has become more widely understood; clients and users are increasingly concerned about their data strategies (for surety, productivity, and sustainability) and seeking better control of their digital destiny with more IFC Mandates around the world as a consequence.
Looking forward, my priorities for 2022 can be categorized into three main areas:
Delivery of Standards and Services - laying new foundations, solutions, and services.
Reach new markets and domains - the need to get closer to users, expand in emerging markets and extend the schema and services to new domains.
Quality assurance through certification - securing the future software and compliance program.
The buildingSMART International Virtual Summit Spring 2022
The upcoming virtual summit will again and the planned event for Rome has been moved until Spring 2023 – having put in all the groundwork we will carry out everything as planned just one year later. Same format, same venues, hopefully even the same week (27-31 March 2023).
Taking on board feedback from the past few Virtual Summits, the duration has been reduced to one full week with an Opening Plenary Day of keynote presentations, three and a half days of Room Sessions, and a final Closing Plenary on Friday afternoon. The cost for attendees will be just €10 to cover platform registration fees, and as such, we look forward to an even larger audience than we have previously seen.
Standards and certifications: Will they increase the maturity in projects, or can they be a game changer in BIM?
Mainstream clients, industry leaders, and AEC industry experts from Deutsche Bahn, Siemens Real Estate, Oracle, planen-bauen 4.0, DIN and the British Standards Institution meet at a roundtable moderated by buildingSMART International to discuss the impact of current BIM standards.
Expect a vivid panel of experts having a strategic look at BIM from different angles. You will gain insights into how BIM standards and certifications consolidate the industry and drive innovation at the same time.
More information including the full list of speakers can be found on the registration page via the link below.
The next gathering of the General Assembly of Implementers will once again be a virtual event. You only need to register once to gain access to the two days of meetings, which will take place on:

This webinar will showcase the various activities and working groups of the BIMForum and its new alliance with bS-USA and invite the wider community to participate in our work of advancing our industry. In the last two decades technologies have demonstrated the power of collaboration, innovation, and technology throughout the design-build-operate life cycle of a facility.
At the same time, the fragmented nature of our industry creates challenges for fully leveraging already available and future technologies for a wide range of projects. The BIMForum is the place where practitioners can learn, discuss, plan and implement technology solutions that integrate the efforts of the various project participants and create significant value for our projects.
Speakers:
Jim Bedrick - Principal @ AEC Process Engineering
Jan Reinhardt - Principal and Founder @ ADEPT Project Delivery
Be a leader in developing IFC standards to meet the common
need for digital permitting of built assets
Regulatory approval processes are a major source of delay and risk for building projects worldwide. Moves to introduce information-based processes are hampered by the lack of standards around the specific information needed. Vendor-independent international conventions will encourage development and adoption. More and more institutions are promoting this approach.
buildingSMART International is calling on industry sponsorship to fund and engage with the project editorial team to capture the key building information that controls the application and decisions found in their own regulations.
In other regulatory news, the Regulatory Room has just hosted its second 'Open House' session titled "Towards Automated Building Compliance". The webinar gave an introduction to how open standards are accelerating progress towards automated building compliance - starting with the challenges faced by designers and regulators, then looking at the steps that can be taken to use openBIM to improve the process and ultimately make the process simpler and more accurate. The webinar was recorded and is available for viewing now.
Open Design Alliance (ODA), provider of complete interoperability solutions for CAD and BIM, have just announced the release of IFC conversion as part of its BimRv SDK (Software Development Kit). BimRv SDK is ODA’s industry-leading standalone solution for reading and visualizing Autodesk® Revit® files. BimRv also offers limited creation support for Revit files.
Tunnelbuilder puts the Spotlight on buildingSMART International
