This major piece of news has been as a result of many years hard work and dedication from many different stakeholders and key members of the buildingSMART community.
We have some updates from the Compliance Program related to some new leadership announcements. We are also pleased to share that the 2024 openBIM Awards Program is live and open for submissions. IFC 4.3 Published as an ISO Standard
buildingSMART International is delighted to announce that IFC 4.3 is now formally approved and published as an international standard by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This accreditation solidifies IFC 4.3 as the latest iteration of the successful ISO 16739 standard, marking a major step forward for the built environment.
Clive Billiald, Chief Executive of buildingSMART International, stated "The formal publication of IFC 4.3 as an internationally accredited standard is a testament to the tireless efforts of everyone involved in its development. This was almost ten years in the making. I want to acknowledge and recognise the hard work, dedication, and commitment of a diverse, global group of experts, in both the buildingSMART and ISO/CEN communities, who have made this possible".
buildingSMART is delighted to announce the commencement of the annual openBIM Awards Program for 2024. As the standards body driving the digital transformation in the built environment, bSI invites participants from around the world to showcase their outstanding achievements in leveraging openBIM methodologies.
New Professional Certification Leadership Appointments
We are excited to announce new leadership appointments within our Professional Certification Program, integral to buildingSMART's Compliance Program. These appointments signify our commitment to fostering professionalism and proficiency across the built environment sector.
The Compliance Committee Executive, comprising Céline Bent (Compliance Director bSI), Léon van Berlo (Technical Director bSI), Clive Biliald (CEO bSI), Stefan Constantinescu (bS Romania), Calvin Kam (bS USA), Helga Tauscher (bS Germany), and Lai Wei (bS China), oversees the governance of our Professional Certification Program. Under their guidance, we introduce the following appointments:
Steering Committee Leader: Cornelius Preidel (bS Germany) will assume this pivotal role, supported by Mark Baldwin (bS Switzerland) in the first year.
Foundation / Management SubCommittee Leaders: Adrian Wildenauer (bS Switzerland) and Winfried Stix (bS Austria) will jointly lead this committee, ensuring the maintenance and enhancement of qualification standards.
Practitioner SubCommittee Leader: Marina Korol (bS Slovenia), currently leading the Task Force to internationalize the new Practitioner Level, will take over leadership of the Practitioner SubCommittee upon completion of the internationalization work. To ensure a seamless transition, all Practitioner Subcommittee activities are temporarily on hold until the international conversion concludes.
We extend heartfelt congratulations to the new leadership team and eagerly anticipate their collective efforts in advancing the Professional Certification Program. Additionally, we extend our gratitude to previous SubCommittee Leaders, participants, and Chapter Program teams for their invaluable contributions and steadfast support of Professional Certification.

Kazakhstan and Iceland Approved as Developing Chapters
At the buildingSMART International Summit in Valencia, the submission from Kazakhstan and Iceland were approved by the buildingSMART board. Aidan Mercer, Director of Marketing at bSI commented that "we were impressed by both Iceland and Kazakhstan’s submissions, capturing the essence of openBIM in both submissions and the desire to collaborate with the international community”.
The Fellows and Richard Petrie Award Winners Announced
At the buildingSMART International Summit in Valencia, Spain, we are delighted to announce the recipient list for the Fellows and Richard Petrie Awards. buildingSMART recognizes outstanding contributions to the development of open standards with these two award categories.
buildingSMART International and Digital Built Environment Institute Announce Collaboration Agreement
buildingSMART International (bSI), the worldwide authority driving the transformation of the built environment is delighted to announce a strategic collaboration agreement with the Digital Built Environment Institute (DBEI), a leading organization dedicated to fostering best practices in the digital built environment.
PERI is one of the largest manufacturers and suppliers of formwork and scaffolding systems, with a reputation for cutting-edge technology, innovative strength and close customer proximity, and has joined bSI as a Standard Member. Founded in 1969, PERI has been supporting the innovation and use of open standards through project support for engineers around the world.
The buildingSMART International Summit in Valencia took place between 12th to 15th March 2024, with over 600 registrations from 50 countries. All of the recordings have been published within the event platform, accessible to all ticket holders, and will soon also be published on buildingSMART's YouTube channel.
