buildingSMART International appoints Dennis Shelden as co-lead of the Technical Room

Dennis Shelden (left) has been appointed co-lead of the Technical room to assist with the development of innovative programs to align with the fast-moving digitization of the industry. Dennis is an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture, and Director of the Digital Building Laboratory at Georgia Tech. An expert in applications of digital technology in the process of building design, construction and operations, he has worked in professional practice, technology entrepreneurship and academia across architectural, building engineering and computing disciplines. He has lectured and written widely on topics of computational applications to architecture and building industry transformation. He was previously CTO and Co-founder of the firm Gehry Technologies from 2002-2014 and Associate Professor of Practice in Design Computation at MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning from 2005-2016.

Mr Shelden will co-lead the Technical Room with Greg Schleusner (right), Director of Design Technology Innovation at HOK. Mr Schleusner has been leading this effort since January 2017 and will continue to develop leadership and digital strategies for buildingSMART. One of the major priorities is the development of a Technology Road Map for bSI, putting the framework in place to support greater crowdsourcing potential. This will add innovation to bSI’s standards and tools and set the vision for future development that supports the overall growth strategy.

Richard Petrie, buildingSMART International CEO, said “The development of a Technology Road Map for our standards and putting in place the technical underpinning to support greater crowdsourcing of solutions is a key goal for buildingSMART International. The appointment of Dennis will help strengthen these initiatives and support the growth and development of our tools and standards. Dennis will add the technical know-how to expand the use of bSI tools, coupled with the expertise and experience of Greg makes this appointment even more exciting”.
